Rosneft-supported Exploration of the Continental Shelf in the Arctic Ocean Continues

15 August 2024

Continental shelf exploration in the Arctic Ocean continues with Rosneft's support as part of the  Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment's strategic initiative ‘Geology.Revival of a Legend’.

Earlier the specialised research drilling vessel ‘Bavenit’ left the port of Murmansk for the Eastern Arctic. The large-scale geological expedition was organised by Rosneft's Arctic Research Centre and the Federal Agency for Mineral Resources (Rosnedra). Field work in the Laptev and East Siberian Seas will be carried out by FSBI "VNIIOkeangeologia".

The vessel ‘Bavenit’, from which the work is carried out, is equipped with innovative domestic equipment to fulfil the tasks of the expedition. Unique drilling and geophysical well testing technologies in difficult geological and climatic conditions were developed as part of Rosneft's stratigraphic drilling project, which has been implemented since 2020 in Russia's northern seas.

The Arctic region, with its colossal amounts of natural resources, is strategically important for the Russian Federation. In 2017, specialists of FSBI ‘VNIIOkeangeologia’ have estimated the initial total geological hydrocarbon resources of the Arctic Ocean marginal seas within the exclusive economic zone at 173 billion tonnes of fuel equivalent. The purpose of the expedition is core sampling for subsurface imaging of the studied regions, as well as to estimate the extent of the Russian continental offshore in the Arctic Ocean. The comprehensive research programme will be conducted until mid-September and will end in the port of Pevek.
